Each student is assigned a professional academic counselor for the length of his/her time at Penn.  PENNCAP counselors are available to discuss an array of  issues faced by students, from how to adjust to the Penn environment as a freshman, to how to finalize graduation plans as a senior. Throughout the students’ tenure, PENNCAP counselors are available to advocate for and coach students through their Penn experience.

Academic advisingAcademic Advising

Academic advising is more than simply deciding which courses to take. PENNCAP counselors can help students understand the difference between meeting requirements and meeting requirements in a way that’s more advantageous to the student. The advising services offered by PENNCAP supplement what the students receive through their home school (Engineering, Wharton, The College, and Nursing) and is considered a valuable resource by students who utilize this service.

Weingarten Workshop 2012: Study Smart for the SciencesTutoring and Academic Support

PENNCAP works closely with the Tutoring Center and the Weingarten Learning Resources Center to provide students with the most effective strategies for dealing with their academic challenges and for thriving within the classroom.  The Academic Coordinator meets with students individually to help them cultivate a range of skills required for success in their particular classes, facilitates PENNCAP-exclusive academic workshops, and promotes initiatives designed to foster academic success.

The Graduate School Mentoring Initiative (GSMI)

The Graduate School Mentoring Initiative is designed to foster heightened interest and confidence in PENNCAP Sophomores and Juniors who are considering the possibility of applying to graduate and law school. The initiative utilizes a three-pronged focus to support our students: panel discussions and workshops addressing their most pertinent concerns; personal mentoring from a graduate student in the desired field of the participant; subsidized Kaplan online test-prep courses during the spring semester of Junior year.  Participants must fulfill certain requirements and the program is facilitated by Dr. Sanjeevini Lokhande, Coordinator of the GSMI.

Walnut St Theatre_Fall 2017Cultural Enrichment

PENNCAP students are invited to attend a number of cultural activities at no cost. Staff coordinate museum visits, dramatic and musical events, cultural dinners, and have taken out-of-town trips to New York City, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. Throughout all of the activities, students get a chance to experience the excitement of art and culture and develop friendships with other participants who have similar interests.

2019 Spring Break Alternative Service Trip to Puerto RicoPENNCAP International Initiative

The PENNCAP International Initiative is a new program that provides funding to select PENNCAP students who have identified research or service projects abroad.  This Initiative is made possible through a generous gift from two Penn alumni.

During the Pre-Freshman Program (PFP), students are introduced to their Peer Mentor.  Peer Mentors are upper-level PENNCAP students who can relate to the issues common among first-year students. Peer Mentors keep in touch with their students on a regular basis, providing success strategies and friendships to their students. Many students consider their Peer Mentor the greatest resource their first year at Penn.

Workshops and Information Sessions

PENNCAP offers workshops on topics such as financial literacy, exam preparation, study abroad, career development, and graduate school.  In addition, PENNCAP staff arrange for speakers from departments such as the Office of International Programs, Career Services and Student Financial Services, to name a few.
